October 10, 2025 | Izmir Institute of Technology
This workshop aims to bring together researchers working in Digital Humanities, particularly in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Models (LLM), within the field of Ottoman history and Turkish studies. Our objective is to explore new frontiers, develop future research initiatives, and create innovative methodologies that harmonize traditional historiographical approaches with modern digital tools.
Automated processing of Ottoman and Turkish texts, adaptation of language models to historical documents, and multilingual text analysis techniques. Pattern recognition and semantic analysis in large datasets.
Systematic digitization of Ottoman archival documents, OCR technologies, and computational transfer of handwritten texts. Metadata standards and long-term preservation strategies.
Visualization of historical data through interactive maps, timelines, and network analysis tools. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and temporal analysis techniques.
Development of new research methodologies that integrate traditional historiographical methods with digital tools. Hypothesis testing and quantitative history approaches.
Establishing sustainable collaboration networks among historians, computer scientists, linguists, and archivists. Joint project development and resource sharing.
Ethical considerations in digital humanities, data security, and long-term project sustainability. Open access policies and social responsibility.
Our workshop on October 10, 2025, will feature keynote presentations, panel discussions, working groups, and exploratory sessions for future collaborations.
To participate in our workshop, you must submit an application that meets one of the following criteria. Each application will be rigorously evaluated by our scientific committee.
Present a concrete research project that employs digital humanities methodologies in Ottoman/Turkish studies. The project methodology, tools utilized, and results obtained should be detailed comprehensively.
Develop an innovative approach proposal for the application of NLP/LLM technologies in historical research. The theoretical framework and implementation potential should be clearly articulated.
Present a digitized historical dataset that can be made available to the research community. Dataset content, format standards, and access conditions should be specified.
